I remember humming an incomplete version of the verse and chorus to myself in the summer of 2006, when I was living on and off in Paris and learning French in earnest for the first time.
I don’t quite remember when or how I connected them, but by 2015 everything must have been wired together because I have recordings of myself humming it. I also added a bridge that didn’t feel right but allowed me to imagine the song end-to-end.
Going into the studio in 2023 to make a demo, I found myself rewriting the harmony of the bridge on the spot. Instead of staying in D Major, it cycles to the distant B♭ Major — then uses B♭ as a pivot note, reinterpreting it as the ♭7 of Eø7, to get back.
In 2026, I turned my demo into a Suno version that gave an interesting take on the vocals and some novel flourishes in the guitar chords. Despite many rounds of audio prompting, it still plays things too safe during the bridge — scales and arpeggios creating the forward motion instead of licks and strumming.
I’m still looking for a singer/guitarist to collaborate with and fully build out the bridge.
Writing the song 20 years ago, my friend Chris Ayer was just starting as a singer/songwriter. It was the era of Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz. That’s still the dream. A singer with his guitar, in an intimate setting, creating a shared moment of young love and optimism.

Pas la peine tu sais déjà Rien ne va quand tu n'es pas là So tell me why do we start again When we know the end Why do we bother to pretend La fille en rouge La la la...
