Lover Cover Me

Lisburn Road

Sketches for this song started back in 2006 with a tune called Il n’y a aucun besoin that I wrote about a panda. In 2019, I cannibalized the chorus to create Lover Cover Me, a song about how love evolves over time.

The model for this song is Eric Clapton, who I was fortunate enough to see live in New York City in the late 90s. That concert still moves me today. Clapton is a great teacher of any aspiring songwriter, and I hope you hear what I’ve learned from him in this song.

Lyrics

We were young, so young and free
Unblemished in eternal sun

Full of hope and promises
And certain of what we'd begun

But winds of time would shake the bough
We're older now
What's done can never be undone

Recall when things were whole
And the Earth was one

Love
Lover cover me
Oh lover cover me
Love
Lover cover me
Oh lover cover me

As life flowed in we stemmed its tide
And clung to what we thought was true

But truth evolves and people change
Apologies get overdue

So we dig in a thousand ways
A thousand days
And make it harder to renew

But somehow I'm still me
And you are still you

Love
Lover cover me
Oh lover cover me
Love
Lover cover me
Oh lover cover me

Can we bring it back?
That world inside tomorrow
That passion burning in our eyes
Have we lost that track?
The one that winds from sorrow
The one that leads to summer skies

So I'm fine.
How bout you?
With all we've been through.
The bank's immune to any run.
So let us purge our debt.
And redeem our fun.

Love
Lover cover me
Oh lover cover me
Love
Lover cover me
Oh lover cover me
